Fighting Fire-History of the McLeod County Volunteer Fire Departments
August 17th -21st-10am –10pm Commercial Building
The McLeod County Historical Society and Museum is excited to bring you this year’s theme displays for the McLeod County Fair. We are “Fighting Fire” in 2016 with a history of each of the McLeod County Community Volunteer Fire Departments! You will see displays filled with artifacts and photos from all eight organized Fire Departments. Our newest History Booklet will be for sale, giving an in-depth history of each of the Volunteer Fire Departments in McLeod County and how they got their start. Early hand pulled hose wagons, chemical pumps and other antique equipment will be on display for guests to learn more about how fires were fought in the late 1800-early 1900s.
As always the Museum will be offering a fun way to experience history, with our “Fire Fighter Photos for Facebook”! Get your picture taken on the authentic 1953 International Fire Truck used by the Stewart Fire Department for many years, but now owned and preserved by local Stewart Historian, Jim Pessek. For a dollar donation you can climb aboard, get your photo taken and download it off our McLeod County Historical Museum Facebook Page!
We will also be raising funds with our “Fire Bucket Challenge!!!” Some brave souls and great supporters of history have pledged to raise $300 each day of the Fair, or get their fire put out with a bucket of water over the head! Best part-the bucket is an authentic leather Plato Fire Fighter’s bucket used on the old bucket brigades in the 1800s. So stop by the commercial building and check out all things Fire Fighting and History at the McLeod County Fair!!!
